    Posted: 07 January 2010 at 2:55pm

The following is a copy of the pylon racing rules adopted by QCRCC at the January meeting.  Several people have already gotten their planes and are getting ready to test fly them.  At the November meeting the club voted to have 3 club league races with a practice "tune-up" race sometime in April.  The race dates are 22 May, 12 June, and 17 July.  I think that if all goes well, we may add some race dates later into the summer and fall.

Club 40 Pylon Racing Rules for 2010

I.                  Equipment

A.                Airframes

1.   Minimum of 550 sq. inches wing area, minimum 54 inch wing span, and minimum weight 5 lbs

2.   Airframes

a)                  World Models Sky Raider Mach II ARF

b)                  World Models LA Racer ARF

c)                  Sig 4-Star 40 ARF (but, must meet the 5lb. minimum weight and possibly for this racing year only)

3.                  Plane must be completely “out-of-the-box” stock as per factory design.  You may only repair, reinforce, or recover the airframe, but only as per original shape.  No speed enhancing modifications.

4.                  Wings must be attached with wing bolts

5.                  Dual aileron servos may be used on the LA Racer only as per factory design

6.                  Any spinner up to 2.5 inches may be used

7.                  Standard sized servos must be used and mounted using 4 screws

B.                 Engines

1.                  Any RC .40 size 2-stroke small frame bushing motor may be used

2.                  Must be completely stock with the original type carburetor and muffler with baffles as provided by the factory

3.                  Must idle at a standstill and cut off on demand

4.                  Examples

6.                  Muffler fuel tank pressure only

7.                  Fuel- Bring your own with 15 % or less Nitro recommended

8.                  All planes will be inspected and weighed before each race as part of registration and after any repairs for safety

II.               The Competition

NOTE: THIS COMPETITION IS STRICTLY FOR FUN AND BRAGGING RIGHTS ONLY.  THERE WILL NOT BE ANY MONEY, PRIZES OR BIG TROPHYS.   EVERY COMPETITOR IS EXPECTED TO COMPETE AS SPORTSMEN/SPORTSWOMEN WITH INTEGRETY AT ALL TIMES.  ALL SEA-LAWYERS, HAIR-SPLITTERS AND THOSE WITH THE PRIME OBJECTIVE OF PUSHING ALL RULES TO THEIR LIMIT, SHOULD STAY AT THE HOUSE.

A.                Course Workers

1.                  Starter/Flagman- signals the start and finish of each race, communicates cuts to the spotters, and determines the finish order of the race

2.                  Spotters- there will be one per pilot, count laps and communicates lap info and cuts to their designated pilot

3.                  Cut Judges- one per pylon, determines when and which plane cuts inside of the pylon, communicates cuts to the starter and spotters

4.                  Scorekeeper- collects heat results from the starter, tallies and records scores on the master score sheet, posts heat scores on a pilot board

5.                  Pit Boss- does safety inspections, lines up each heats planes in the pit area coordinates radio board

6.                  Pilots will rotate as course workers when not racing a heat

B.                 The Race

1.                  The Starter will call the pilots and spotters to the line from the pit area bringing their own starting equipment to the line.

2.                  Each plane will be held up for the cut judges to be able to identify each plane on the course.

3.                  After identification, the starter will give a 3 minute warning to get airborne and in a holding pattern to the east of the #2 pylon.  Any plane not airborne after the 3 minute warning will be DQ and receive a score of DNF for the heat.

4.                  At the end of the 3 minutes or when all pilots are ready, a 30 second and a 10 second to go signal will be given.  Any plane crossing the start line early will be penalized unless they recross the start line by going high and to circling to the left behind traffic.

5.                  Any landings after the start signal will be given a DNF.  There will be not take offs after the start of the race.

6.                  Each heat will be 10 laps with a maximum of 4 planes per heat

7.                  Each spotter will count the laps for his designated pilot and notify the pilot of lap number and when a cut is called.

8.                  When 10 laps are completed, each pilot will pull above the race course and reduce speed until the completion of the heat

9.                  Landings will not begin until all pilots are ready and must be called by each pilot.

Everyone is welcome to come watch, race, watch and race or just help man the course.  However, I want to emphasize that this is for fun and the only thing we are really serious about is these events being stictly for fun.  So get a plane ready, come have some fun and meet some people that enjoy our sport.

Robert,
Is the minimum weight of the plane dry or is it when it is full of fuel. My friend has built one of these and his finish weight is 4.2 pounds which is going to require about 12 ounces of extra weight to get it to the 5 pound minimum if the weight is without fuel. For the members who have built these already are your planes going to require this much extra weight?

Mine weighs under 5 pounds as well.  I think we are going to have to amend the rules.  My plane balanced and RTF  is around 4.3#, and I surely do not wanna put any weight in it.

I agree fully.  I am not for adding that much weight to these airframes.  I think that we are going to have to amend the flying weight.  Has anyone weight one fueled ready to race to see what the all up weight would look like?  I have not even checked to see what size the fuel tank is on these planes.  Has anyone weighed out one of the LA Racer?  I know that Mike Moss and Dave Gardner have them, but do not know it they are built yet.  Lets check it out and come up with a good weight.

I have been looking at giving this a try. It sounds like too much fun. Please take a look at RCPRO.ORG. They state 4Lb 4Oz for novice class (Bushed Engines) and 4Lb 8 Oz for advanced class (Ball Bearing Engines). These weights are for the LA Racer and the Mach II. I hope this helps.
